Event Information

The day will consist of training provided by Alzeimher's Society.


  • 9.15am - Registration and refreshments

  • 9.30am - Welcome. Introductions and housekeeping Learning agreement

  • 09.45am - Ice breaker activity – ‘Who’s right?’ ‘What‘s happening?’ Awareness of attitudes towards dementia. What’s going on in the brain? How damage to the brain might affect a person’s behavior.

  • 10.45am - Break

  • 11.00am - Dementia and the symptoms. What is dementia? Signs and symptoms.

  • 11.30pm - ‘Who am I?’ Person centered approach verses medical model Flourishing in an acute setting. Memory management. Responding to emotions.

  • 1pm - Lunch

  • 1.30pm - ‘A strange new world’. How dementia affects our senses – including content on dementia and sight loss developed in partnership with RNIB. Clinical environment

  • 2.45pm - Break

  • 3pm - ‘Connect with me’. Connecting through touch. Effective communication approaches

  • 4pm - Review of the day and evaluation

  • 4.30pm - Close


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and recognise how a diagnosis of dementia and delirium assessment, treatment and care impacts on those with the condition, their families and those caring for them.

  • Identify the early symptoms of dementia and delirium thus improving their knowledge and skills on how to care for patients with the conditions

  • Highlight the ethical implications of dementia and cancer on treatment and care in an oncology setting

  • Discuss how person-centred care and using knowledge of the person will improve their well-being

  • Highlight how factors such as the environment and communication may impact on a persons behaviour

  • Identify the impact of caring on families and the importance of supporting and involving them in discussions around the treatment and care

  • Discuss the importance of Advance Care plans and lasting power of attorneys in planning future care and treatment
